Coach Josh McDaniels says the quarterback competition between Brady Quinn and rookie Tim Tebow for the No. 2 job behind Kyle Orton is still alive.

He even suggested it could fluctuate from week to week during the regular season, depending on how the game plan is drawn up.

On Tuesday, as the Broncos began preparations for Sunday's opener at Jacksonville, McDaniels greeted an inquiry about the backup job like this:

"That's a good question," McDaniels said. "We're not going to name one right now."

Instead, McDaniels said Brady and Tebow would continue to be evaluated during the week leading up to the Jacksonville game.

"We'll try to make the decision we feel is best on game-day for our team, based on how we're going to play the game," McDaniels said. "I think there are a lot of factors that will go into that, and how they practice and how things look during the week will probably play a large role in determining who we name as the No. 2 and who we put as the No. 3."

The implication is game-planning could have a bearing on whether Tebow or Quinn is No. 2 for a particular game. There has been some speculation that Tebow could be used in specialized situations or formations during a game.

Tebow brings an element of versatility to his game because of his running ability while Brady has more experience, though both are playing in McDaniels' offensive system for the first time.

The Broncos play their season opener in Tebow's hometown but McDaniels, according to The Denver Post, said that won't factor into his decision.
