The Chargers added an experienced reserve at quarterback on Monday, reaching contract terms with veteran J.T. O'Sullivan on a one-year deal.

O'Sullivan becomes the Chargers' third quarterback, behind starter Philip Rivers and backup Billy Volek.

Rookie Jonathan Crompton was released in the Chargers' final cut over the weekend, leaving Rivers and Volek as the only quarterbacks on San Diego's active roster. Crompton was added to the Chargers' practice squad Sunday.

Chargers general manager A.J. Smith told the San Diego Union-Tribune that the team had been leaning toward going with Rivers and Volek with the ability to tap Crompton from the practice squad in the event the need arose. But O'Sullivan's availability following his release over the weekend by the Cincinnati Bengals changed the Chargers' thinking.
"A third quarterback was not in our original plans when making up the roster," Smith told the Union-Tribune. "But with the availability of J.T., we felt it would be a good third level of maximum protection at a crucial position."

The Chargers are O'Sullivan's eighth team since breaking into the league as a sixth-round pick of New Orleans in 2002. His most productive season came in 2008 with San Francisco, where he started eight of nine games in which he played while throwing for 1,678 yards and eight touchdowns. He had 11 interceptions.

O'Sullivan was expected to formally join the Chargers on Tuesday to give the team time to clear roster space for his addition.

Meanwhile, outside linebacker Shawne Merriman was held out of Monday's practice and he was seen wearing a protective boot to take pressure off a sore Achilles' tendon. He playing status for next Monday's opener at Kansas City remains uncertain.
