oach Mike Shanahan quashed the Albert Haynesworth-to-Tennessee trade rumors.Shanahan was asked after Washington's Wednesday practice about Haynesworth's status amidst the rumors of a deal that would send the defensive lineman back to the Titans, for whom he was an All-Pro in 2007 and 2008.
"We've heard all these rumors and speculation," said Shanahan, with whom Haynesworth has been at odds for nearly six months. "Albert had a great practice today. He'll be ready to go this weekend. ... Albert will be with our team on Sunday."
Haynesworth, who hasn't spoken publicly since a brief session after the Aug. 27 preseason victory over the New York Jets, was unavailable for comment.
Given a record seven-year, $100 million contract by the Redskins during the first hours of the 2009 free agent signing period, Haynesworth was out of shape and unhappy for much of his Washington debut season. However, Haynesworth's discontent upped a couple of notches when he learned that Shanahan and new defensive coordinator Jim Haslett wanted him to play nose tackle in the team's new 3-4 defensive scheme.
Even though Haynesworth accepted a $21 million portion of his contract's guaranteed $41 million in April, he still declined to participate in the offseason conditioning program at Redskins Park. He also drew the ire of such veteran teammates as defensive end Phillip Daniels and linebacker London Fletcher by skipping the mandatory minicamp that ended the offseason in June.
Haynesworth then surprised many by reporting on time for training camp. However, after flunking the conditioning test three times, he didn't join his teammates until the 10th day of practice.
He has only spoken publicly three times since last season, praising Haslett and the scheme after the preseason opener against Buffalo, ripping the staff for his first-half absence against Baltimore and sounding upbeat again after playing on the first series against the Jets. Haslett has used him at nose tackle, where he has relieved Ma'ake Kemoeatu, and at right end, where he has spelled Kedric Golston.
Haynesworth is expected to come off the bench in Sunday's opener against Dallas.
