Top-seeded Rafael Nadal played precise tennis on Tuesday night to advance into his third straight U.S. Open quarterfinals. Nadal defeated his compatriot Feliciano Lopez in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in convincing fashion for a fourth straight match in the tournament. Nadal has not dropped a single service game or set throughout the Open. The world No. 1 blistered Lopez from the onset of the match, winning four of the first five games in the opening set. Lopez never gained any momentum and Nadal closed the match out by winning every point in his final service game.
Nadal's serve was fantastic against the 23rd-seeded Lopez. He won 90 percent of his first-serve points, 62 percent of his second-serve points and generated nine aces. The most impressive statistic, however, is that Nadal only committed 14 unforced errors throughout the entire match.
As the tournament has progressed, Nadal's game is strengthening. His acclaimed serve and groundstrokes -- charged with heavy topspin -- are dangerously becoming more powerful as he breezes through his draw. Nadal generated a first serve of 135 mph in the third game of the opening set -- his most powerful serve thus far throughout the tournament.
Nadal, this year's French Open and Wimbledon champion, will face eighth-seeded Fernando Verdasco, another Spaniard, in the quarterfinals. It is the first U.S. Open quarterfinal match between two Spaniards during the Open Era.
Nadal holds a career 10-0 record against Verdasco, defeating him four times on hard court.
Nadal, at 24-years of age, is already an eight-time Grand Slam champion. But the U.S. Open remains the only major eluding Nadal from capturing a career Grand Slam. Nadal has never reached the finals at Flushing Meadows.
