According to KTVU, six people have been treated for severe burns, and the emergency room at a local hospital has been "overwhelmed" by residents needing medical attention. Police are going door to door near Skyline Boulevard evacuating the immediate area.
At least a dozen homes have been destroyed, CBS News reported, after a fireball rose 60 feet into the air following the blast, which is said to have been caused by a broken natural gas line. Immediately after the accident, speculation swirled about a possible plane crash, but authorities at San Francisco International Airport had no reports of missing aircraft.
Five thousand residents are without power, ABC News reported, and firefighters from neighboring cities were flooding into San Bruno to help combat the flames. An air tanker is dropping loads of flame retardant to try and quell the four alarm blaze, and highway 280 has been shut down so that emergency vehicles can get through.
