Rockies starting pitcher Aaron Cook suffered a non-displaced fracture of the fibula in his right leg Wednesday night after he was struck by a screaming line drive off the bat of Joey Votto in the sixth inning of Colorado's 9-2 win over the Reds. The injury couldn't come at a worse time for Cook, who was starting just his second game since returning to the Rockies rotation, or for his team, which has surged back to the fringes of the NL West race and is currently on a six-game winning streak.
"We're going to have to deal with that and see where it takes us as far as time frame and things like that," Rockies manager Jim Tracy told reporters. "We have to take it a day at a time and see where that all goes."
The Denver Post reported that the injury isn't necessarily season-ending, but Cook is certainly going to be sidelined in the near-term. In fact a return to the mound in 2010 may hinge on the Rockies' playoff hopes.
Cook's agent Joe Bick told the Post Thursday morning that it's unlikely he'll return unless Colorado qualifies for the postseason.
"I would consider it a longshot that he's back in the regular season. I don't know any other way to see it," Bick said. "He's in reasonably good spirits. It's just obviously frustrating to have this happen the way he has pitched in his last two games."
