Johan Santana will undergo season-ending surgery after an examination revealed a tear in the anterior capsule in his left shoulder, the Mets announced Friday.

The pitcher left his most recent start last Thursday against the Braves after five innings with what was described as a strained pectoral muscle. That problem kept him from making his next scheduled start against the Nationals on Tuesday, and an MRI exam Thursday revealed the tear in his shoulder capsule.

According to a statement from the Mets, "the injury is located on the front and bottom part of the shoulder close to the pectoral muscle, resulting in discomfort radiating through both the pectoral muscle and shoulder."

The team said Santana will undergo surgery in the "near future" and should be able to resume throwing in the spring. That's a pretty open-ended prognosis, so Mets fans probably shouldn't pencil their ace into the Opening Day rotation.

Santana quietly had another strong season in New York, going 11-9 with a 2.98 ERA in 29 starts this year. The two-time Cy Young Award winner has three years remaining on his contract.
