Ricky Williams Quietly Assumes Role of Dolphins' Player Representative
The 11th-year veteran politely answered question after question about if he was surprised by the gesture, saying he fully understood why it was done and supported it. Then he dropped a surprise when asked if something similar was in the works for Sunday's game between Miami and Buffalo at Ralph Wilson Stadium and how that would come about.
"I'm not sure to be honest with you. I would imagine it comes through the reps. Ricky (Williams) is our rep," he said. "I would imagine it would come through the reps and then Ricky would spread the word."
There was a dramatic pause, and then some of the television cameramen shut their cameras off as Pennington laughed and reminded everyone why it's not safe to assume anything.
As it turns out, Williams was the alternate to Camarillo and ascended to the position when Camarillo was traded. He had spoken to reporters for a little less than three minutes as soon as the locker room was open to the media but was never asked the same question. Pennington was asked.
Pennington actually admitted that was why he didn't want to be the player rep because then he'd have to answer these types of questions, especially considering the current labor situation. Williams, on the other hand, doesn't open up to the media that much but he also does not shy away from questions like that one. Unfortunately, it was too late to ask him to come back.
