Tennessee's men's basketball program has received a notice of investigation from the NCAA regarding possible recruiting violations by the coaching staff.

Athletic director Mike Hamilton called a press conference for 3 p.m. Friday to discuss the letter of inquiry from the NCAA.

According to multiple sources, the NCAA interviewed both head coach Bruce Pearl as well as associate head coach Tony Jones, Pearl's top-ranking assistant and a major recruiter. The investigation is believed to center on excessive contact with recruits and, according to ESPN, the use of unauthorized phones to contact recruits.

Thursday night, Tennessee said it had not received an official letter of inquiry.

The Volunteer football program self-reported six secondary violations under Lane Kiffin, though ESPN reports the NCAA has expanded its investigation into the football team beyond the inquiry into the use of hostesses at high school football games.

The Volunteers went 26-9 last season and advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament, the school's best-ever finish.
