Tim Tebow's Jacksonville Homecoming Remains Up in Air
Perhaps seeing an advantage in the element of surprise, Denver coach Josh McDaniels is withholding until the last possible moment whether Brady Quinn or Tebow will be on the 45-player game-day roster as the No. 2 quarterback behind starter Kyle Orton.
There has been plenty of speculation that Tebow, the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner who led the University of Florida to two national titles, could see spot duty in specialized situations such as a wildcat-type formation. That would likely mean he would be designated the No. 2 quarterback so he would be among the active players as opposed to being the third, or inactive emergency quarterback.
If such a plan does exist to use Tebow in specialized formations, the Broncos have kept that under wraps, too. They certainly didn't tip their hand in the preseason, using Tebow only in conventional situations in exhibition play.
For what it's worth, Jacksonville coach Jack Del Rio told locally based reporters that he anticipates seeing Tebow on the field in at least one or two instances during the game, and that his team will be ready if that happens.
As for Tebow, he said he's excited just to be returning to Jacksonville for his first professional game after being drafted in the first round by the Broncos.
"It's pretty ironic," Tebow said of going back to his hometown for his first game as a pro. "It's also very exciting and something that will be very memorable for me."
Whether he plays or not, Tebow added.
