Pops Mensah-Bonsu, a former NBA D-League All-Star who had cups of coffee with four NBA squads, is suddenly available. Mensah-Bonsu, who played for CSKA Moscow last season after being cut by the Raptors in January, signed a deal with Caja Laboral of the Spanish ACB this summer. But according to The Hoops Market, Caja Laboral, the defending Spanish champions who just lost league MVP Tiago Splitter to the Spurs, has withdrawn the offer.Caja Laboral's Euroleague season doesn't tip off until October -- the qualifying round for lesser teams begins a little more than a week from now. ACB play begins at the end of the month. The loss of Mensah-Bonsu leaves the team light up front as it begins its title defense.
Mensah-Bonsu, meanwhile, figures to draw major attention among other European competitors ... and perhaps a few NBA teams. Mensah-Bonsu was an absolute beast for Great Britain during August EuroBasket qualifying; with the Bulls' Luol Deng, Mensah-Bonsu helped secure a 2011 Euro berth for the Brits, and did so in stunning fashion, racking copious amounts of points and rebounds. The competition wasn't always top-notch, but even against teams with solid frontcourts, such as Macedonia, Pops did well.
