(Sept. 13) -- After being delayed by blizzard conditions, a medical evacuation flight has arrived in Antarctica to rescue a seriously ill American.

The man, whose illness and name have not been disclosed, is at the U.S. McMurdo Station on Antarctica's north coast.

A New Zealand air force plane with three medical staff on board arrived early Tuesday local time at McMurdo, which is run by Raytheon Polar Services for the U.S. National Science Foundation.

The plane was expected to spend about an hour and a half on the ground before returning with the ailing man to Christchurch in southern New Zealand. The flight should take about seven hours.

The American is expected to be admitted to a Christchurch hospital immediately.

"The medical advice is to get him out of there as soon as possible for hospital care," Kerry Chuck, Raytheon's New Zealand operations manger, told The Associated Press.

The man works for Raytheon, Radio New Zealand reported. Elaine Hood, a U.S.-based spokeswoman for Raytheon Polar Services, could not confirm that for AOL News today.

A New Zealand Orion plane tried to get to McMurdo early Sunday but turned back about an hour from the base because bad weather had closed the base's airstrip, AFP reported.

It's winter in Antarctica, with an extremely short amount of daylight and temperatures about 31 degrees below zero.
