Add Bob Melvin's name to the list of possible replacements for Lou Piniella in Chicago.

The Cubs have sought permission from the Mets to talk to the former Diamondbacks and Mariners manager, a major league source confirmed to FanHouse. Melvin is currently a scout for the Mets.

The 48-year-old has a 493-508 record as a manager in Seattle (2003-04) and Arizona (2005-09), and his teams finished in either first or second place four times in his six full seasons at the helm. The Diamondbacks fired him 29 games into the 2009 season.

Other names that have been mentioned as possibilities in Chicago include Ryne Sandberg, Fredi Gonzalez, Joe Girardi and interim manager Mike Quade.
