The Oakland Raiders home opener this Sunday against the St. Louis will be blacked out to those living within a 75-mile radius of the stadium, because the team did not sell out the game before to the NFL's deadline. Per NFL policy, with few exceptions to the clause, games must be sold out 72 hours prior to kickoff to avoid a television blackout for viewers living within 75 miles of the affiliate's reach in the team's local TV market.
It is the first time the Raiders will have their home opener blacked out since playing the Buffalo Bills in 2004.
This is the eighth home game in a row the Raiders have failed to sell out. The last game the franchise sold out was last year's home opener against the San Diego Chargers. Incidentally, the Chargers' home opener Sunday will also be blacked out.
Since moving back to Oakland from Los Angeles in 1995, the team has had 77 of its 121 regular-season home games blacked out.
