(Sept. 18) – A California woman is suing her gynecologist for allegedly burning her name into her uterus.

Ingrid Paulicivic, a 47-year-old hairdresser from Orange County, had her uterus removed as part of a hysterectomy operation in June 2009. While recovering from surgery, she noticed some burns on her legs and asked her doctor about them in a follow-up appointment.

Her gynecologist, Dr. Red Alinsod, admitted that he'd used an electrocautery device to burn the name "Ingrid" into the woman's removed uterus, so as not to get it mixed up with other organs removed from other patients.

According to court papers, Paulicivic believes there was "no medically necessary purpose or reason" for the branding, and has filed a lawsuit against Alinsod. The suit was first reported by The Smoking Gun, which posted a copy of the woman's court filing on its website. The complaint was filed on Sept. 3. Details have since been picked up by several other news outlets.

Alinsod acknowledged that branding a patient's name onto an organ isn't standard medical procedure, but said he felt comfortable doing it in this case because he considered Paulicivic a "good friend." Normally the patient's name is labeled on a tongue depressor or towel near the removed organ.

Paulicivic's lawyer told CNN that his client had actually never met the doctor before her first consult, but that she's been good friends with a receptionist in his office.

Alinsod hasn't since commented on the lawsuit.
