Texans left tackle Duane Brown has been suspended four games for violating the performance-enhancing drug policy. In a statement, Brown claims that he "unknowingly took a supplement tainted with a banned substance," and is not going to appeal his suspension. He will be eligible to return to the roster October 18.Texans GM Rick Smith called the suspension "a significant blow to our team." He added in a statement, "Our head athletic trainer, head strength and conditioning coach as well as our team nutritionist have had many meetings and presentations constantly reminding our players about the dangers of the supplemental industry and risks associated with taking non-approved products."
Swing tackle Rashad Butler is expected to take Brown's place and former Texans left tackle Ephraim Salaam was signed this morning to play backup. At the end of August, Salaam and former Texan Charles Spencer participated in a tryout for the team with Texans coach Gary Kubiak stating at the time, "If we have some concerns down the road, the depth of our tackle position, we wanted to work them out."
Whoever is playing line will face a significant challenge facing the Cowboys' outstanding pass rusher, DeMarcus Ware, this Sunday at Reliant Stadium. Though the Texans have put up substantial offensive numbers in the preseason and first two games, the Texans' pass protection has been an issue even with Brown in the lineup.
Texans quarterback Matt Schaub was sacked five times in the team's OT comeback win over the Redskins last weekend and two times during the very run-oriented win over the Colts.
