New Orleans and Philadelphia have agreed to a four-player trade, a league source confirmed to FanHouse. The Hornets will send small forward Darius Songaila and rookie forward Craig Brackins to the Sixers in exchange for guard Willie Green and 7-footer Jason Smith. The move, which was first reported by Yahoo! Sports, is the continuation of an active summer for new Hornets general manager Dell Demps.
The former San Antonio executive is clearly determined to show point guard Chris Paul how serious he is about winning after months of legitimate rumblings that the All-Star wants out. Demps engaged in a four-team, five-player trade in early August that sent on-the-rise point guard Darren Collison and veteran James Posey to Indiana but landed New Orleans small forward Trevor Ariza.
The Sixers, who are under new leadership as well with the recent hiring of former New Jersey executive Rod Thorn to join forces with former colleague and Philadelphia team president Ed Stefanski, acquire a reliable veteran presence to bring off the bench in Songila and a young player in Brackins who they are clearly high on.
Green is the key piece in the deal for the Hornets, as he can start when needed but will likely play behind Paul and second-year guard Marcus Thornton. The slashing Green has averaged 9.4 points per game in his seven seasons (all with Philadelphia), and his 45.7 percent showing from the field last season was a career-high, well above his career average of 42.2.
