Cal junior center Max Zhang will skip the 2010-2011 season with the Bears to play for the Chinese National team.

Zhang was a campus cult favorite as the tallest player (7-foot-3) in the history of the Cal program. He averaged 3.1 points, 2.4 rebounds and finished with 37 blocks last season.

Coach Mike Montgomery confirmed that Zhang did not enroll in school for the fall semester. He played with China in the recent World Championships and will compete with the Chinese National Team in the Asian Games in November.

Zhang reviews it as his best chance to be on track for a spot on the Chinese Olympic Team for the 2012 Games in London.

According to the release from the Cal athletic department, the Bears are "hopeful" that Zhang will be back in class in the spring.

"This was something Max couldn't afford to pass up and we understand that," Montgomery said in the Cal statement. "This has always been a lifelong dream of his, and we're wishing him the best of luck."
