NBA D-League Teams Hold Local Tryouts
On the other end of the spectrum, there are many players traveling to several NBA Development League open tryouts simply hoping to get recognized, play in the D-League this season and put themselves in position to some day audition for an actual NBA job.
While eight tryouts already having taken place for individual teams -- along with the D-League national tryout in which FanHouse writer Jordan Schultz attended -- there are still 16 more opportunities around the country for players to tryout for a chance to play in the NBA's official minor league. And, as a bonus, there's a chance NBA decision-makers will be in attendance as well, hoping to find the new diamond in the rough for their own team.
"The Denver tryout went really well. We had sixty guys come in who competed hard and got after it," Idaho Stampede associate head coach Joel Abelson told FanHouse. "Masai Ujiri, the Denver Nuggets new general manager, even showed up to evaluate the talent in the building."
Abelson mentioned that at their next tryout, taking place this weekend with spots still available, they are expecting Portland Trail Blazers executives Rich Cho, Bill Branch, and Michael Born to be in attendance. Fellow Idaho Stampede coaches Randy Livingston and Greg Minor are attending the tryouts to evaluate talent, as well, both knowing what it takes to reach the NBA from their personal experiences in the league.
With few players returning to the Stampede from last year's roster, Abelson expects a couple of players who attended local tryouts to have the opportunity to make the team through training camp. From there, it's anyone's guess as to where that may lead, as several players have gone from having to try out in the D-League to being invited to an NBA training camp -- most recently Denver's Shane Edwards, who made the Albuquerque Thunderbirds' team via a local tryout last season.
Along with their previous tryout with Denver and the upcoming open tryout with Portland, the Stampede will also host a third tryout in Boise, Idaho on October 16.
