Perhaps even more surprising, Shirvell's boss, Attorney General Mike Cox, scolded his employee but hasn't fired him.
"All state employees have a right to free speech outside working hours," Cox said in a statement. "But Mr. Shirvell's immaturity and lack of judgment outside the office are clear."
Shirvell appeared on CNN's "Anderson Cooper 360" to defend his attacks on Armstrong. "Chris Armstrong is a radical homosexual activist who got elected ... to promote a very deeply radical agenda at the University of Michigan."
"His biggest issues were extending the hours at the cafeteria and lowering tuition as well as some gender housing issues," Cooper interjected.
"Do you consider yourself a bigot?" Cooper asked.
"Absolutely not," Shirvell replied. "I'm a Christian citizen exercising my First Amendment rights."
