If it wasn't already evident that the Reds are lacking an ace entering the postseason, Dusty Baker drove the point home Saturday in announcing Edinson Volquez will start Cincinnati's playoff opener. Volquez has started only 12 times this season after making a July return from Tommy John surgery that limited him to nine starts last year, and his numbers have been mediocre. At 4-3 with a 4.31 ERA, Volquez won't impress anyone on paper -- especially if he's matched against Roy Halladay -- but when he's on, the 27-year-old has stuff that stands up to anyone's.
He also has an impressive, if limited, track record against the Phillies. He's 2-0 with a 0.73 ERA in a pair of starts against them, and despite being right-handed should be a good matchup for the Reds against Philadelphia's lefty-heavy lineup. Lefties have hit only .229 against him this year, compared to .273 for right-handers.
Baker didn't announce any of his other playoff starters, saying he probably would do so Sunday. He did, however, award the final regular-season start to Aaron Harang. The longest-tenured Red, Harang is a longshot to make the playoff roster after losing his rotation spot in early September. He's 6-7 with a 5.25 ERA this year.
