During the second period of Saturday's preseason game between the Montreal Canadiens and New York Islanders (a 7-2 Canadiens win), Montreal's Michael Cammalleri was issued a five-minute major and a game-misconduct for his two-handed slash to the ankle of Islanders rookie Nino Niederreiter .

The incident occurred after the two players were involved in what appeared to be a routine collision along the boards, which was then followed by Cammallerri swinging his stick near Niederreitier's head, and then taking a baseball bat-like swing at the back of his ankle, knocking him to the ice.

Here's the video:

There's little doubt that the NHL will be taking a long look at that incident, and it's entirely possible that Montreal could be opening the season without its second-leading goal-scorer from a year ago. Cammalleri tallied 26 goals during the regular season for Montreal before leading the NHL with 13 goals during the postseason, helping Montreal make a stunning run to the Eastern Conference Final.

Niederreiter left the game with what our Chris Botta reports is a leg bruise that is not considered to be serious.
