The battle to determine the final two National League playoff spots has come down to the season's final day -- and potentially beyond.

Both the Giants and Braves have seen opportunities slip away in losing Friday and Saturday to the Padres and Phillies. Those results have set up a free-for-all that could drag on until Tuesday, the day before the playoffs begin.

Here are the potential scenarios for the NL West and NL wild card heading into play Sunday:

• If the Padres and Phillies win Sunday: The Padres win the NL West and the Giants are the wild card.

• If the Giants and Braves win Sunday: The Giants win the NL West and the Braves are the wild card.

• If the Giants and Phillies win Sunday: The Giants win the NL West and the Padres travel to Atlanta for a one-game wild card playoff Monday.

• If the Padres and Braves win Sunday: Those two teams and the Giants finish with identical 91-71 records, leading to a three-tiered playoff for two spots. The Giants and Padres would play Monday in San Diego, with the winner taking the NL West crown and the loser flying to Atlanta to play the Braves for the wild card.
