New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton told reporters Wednesday afternoon that cornerback Tracy Porter suffered a tear of his lateral meniscus in his left knee Sunday and will be out three to four weeks. The injury required arthroscopic surgery.

Porter was injured in the 16-14 win over the Carolina Panthers and this further depletes the injury-riddled secondary of the defending NFL champions.

The Saints lost safeties Pierson Prioleau and Chris Reis to injuries in the Carolina game. Reis is out for the season with a shoulder injury. Roman Harper, another safety, was already out with an injury.

That meant New Orleans used free safety Usama Young at strong safety, Randall Gay, the nickel back, played corner, Malcom Jenkins was the free safety. Rookie Patrick Robinson was prepped to play nickel back.

New Orleans plays at Arizona this Sunday, which is good timing considering the difficulties the Cards are having with their pass game.

The Saints, according to New Orleans.com, worked out free agent safeties on Tuesday, but did not provide names.
