Maryland Head Coach Brenda Frese's Son Diagnosed With Leukemia
Frese, who made the announcement during the team's initial meeting with the media for the season Tuesday, said Tyler, 2, the younger of fraternal twins, was diagnosed three weeks ago during a checkup at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Frese, who led Maryland to the 2006 national title, said Tyler spent a week at the hospital following the diagnosis, but has been home with his family since then.
"He's doing OK," said Frese, 40, who said she does not expect to miss time coaching the team this year.
Tyler and his brother, Markus, were born in February, 2008, following a highly publicized pregnancy that included appearances on the morning news shows. Frese's announcement of her impending birth to her team was shown on the Terps' reality show, "Under the Shell," as well as footage of the coach holding the babies just after they were born.
The Terps beat Duke the day the twins were born and Frese returned to coach the team a few weeks later. The boys have made a few appearances at Maryland games with Frese's husband, local television producer, Mark Thomas.
NOTE -- An earlier publication misidentified the ailing child as Markus.
