Pat McAfee, punter for the Indianapolis Colts, was arrested for public intoxication early Wednesday.

McAfee was reportedly taking a swim in a canal in a nightlife district when police took him in at 5 a.m. According to police, McAfee had a blood alcohol content of 0.15, almost twice the legal limit of 0.08.

Police were initially called when a driver at a red light reported that a shirtless man had approached her car, and the woman feared he would try to get in the car.

When officers asked McAfee if he had been swimming in the canal, he said, "I'm not sure," and claimed he was wet because it was raining, although there was no rain at the time. Eventually, when asked how much he had to drink, McAfee answered, "A lot, cause I'm drunk."

Police said they took him in more for his safety, given the low temperature, as McAfee was cooperative and volunteered to walk home.

Colts president Bill Polian commented on the arrest.

"We are in the process of gathering the relevant facts," Polian said. "When that task is complete, we will deal immediately with the issue of club discipline. Until we complete that process, we will have no further comment."

McAfee, 23, is in his second year out of West Virginia.

UPDATE
