Superman, 72, is changing his look, making him the latest villain-fighting star to undergo a major makeover in recent years. In a new graphic novel out next month, the iconic hero will be transformed from a clean-shaven, grown man pulsating with testosterone into a skinny 20-year-old still making his way in the world, The New York Post reports.
The new, hipster-like hero of the DC Comic novel "Superman: Earth One" is shorter, skinnier and hoodie-wearing, all the better to reflect the changing times of the world in which he lives, says DC Comics publisher Dan DiDio.
"We wanted to show a younger Superman at the early stages of his career, struggling with his identity and his place. He realizes he doesn't belong anywhere and doesn't fit in," DiDio told the Post.
Superman isn't the only superhero to be remade. Fans were furious earlier this year when Wonder Woman underwent a radical transformation, ditching her trademark spangled underwear for black spandex with the help of DC Comics, which is launching a new series about its superheroes.
In June, Michael Straczynski, the series' author, said the famous female superhero was overdue for a costume change. "She's been locked into pretty much the exact same outfit since her debut in 1941," he told The New York Times. "What woman only wears only one outfit for 60-plus years?"
And in the mid-1980s, Spider-Man donned a black-and-white uniform that was created for him after his signature red-and-blue jumpsuit was destroyed in battle. But fans detested the change, and the web-slinging hero was back to his true colors in just a few years.
