While the New England Patriots managed to escape San Diego with a narrow 23-20 victory to improve to 5-1 and keep pace with the first-place New York Jets in the AFC East, they may have lost emerging star safety Patrick Chung for an undetermined amount of time.

Chung, the hero of New England's 41-14 win at Miami three weeks ago when he blocked a punt, a field goal and returned an interception for a touchdown, injured his knee in the second quarter of Sunday's game and did not return. According to Joe Kukurka of NBCConnecticut.com, Chung could miss 1-2 weeks.

Kukura cited 98.5 The Sports Hub's Gresh and Zolak in Boston report via their Twitter page as saying, "Sources tell us that Patriots Safety Patrick Chung will miss 1-2 weeks after getting injured Sunday vs Chargers." Since the Patriots already have had their bye, that equates to 1-2 games for Chung and before Sunday's game he had taken the most snaps on defense of any Patriots player.

New England's secondary suffered a blow at the end of training camp when veteran cornerback Leigh Bodden went on injured reserve with a shoulder injury, leaving youngsters Devin McCourty and Darius Butler back there to contend with the likes of Brandon Marshall, Braylon Edwards and Santonio Holmes.

Chung's solid play had given the defensive backs some comfort, especially with former Patriots wide receiver Randy Moss scheduled to return to Gillette Stadium as a Minnesota Viking this Sunday on Halloween.
