Sex vs. the Internet: 12 Percent of Women Would Rather Stay Online

(Oct. 27) -- The Internet is a glorious invention, but is it really better than sex?

For most Americans, the answer is still a decided "no." But there is a subset of the population, at least, that would rather give up fun between the sheets than cascading style sheets, if forced to choose between the two. Meet the true webophiles: Surprise, more of them are women than men.

Actually, that shouldn't be that much of a shock, given that a greater percentage of Web users are women anyway, and that's the way it's been for at least the past five years. Furthermore, women aren't using the Web just to shop or check out celebrity gossip or other stereotypically "feminine" activities -- more online gamers are female, in fact.

And when it comes to offline fun of an adult sort, the gender divide is especially telling: An AOL News/Poll Position survey of 1,074 American adults recently asked the question, "If you had to choose, would you give up sex or the Internet?"

Twelve percent of women respondents said they'd be willing to forgo sex if it meant they'd be able to continue clicking around online, compared with 10 percent of males.

Sure, those numbers are pretty close, but now look at the reverse -- those who would stop surfing the Web if it meant they could keep on sexin': A clear majority of men, 63 percent surveyed, said they'd give up the Internet for sex. Whereas that was true for only 45 percent of women. And almost as many women, 43 percent, said they had "no opinion" on the matter either way. (Ed note: Suggesting perhaps, the two activities were nearly interchangeable in their minds? Just a thought.) Compare that with the only 27 percent of men who expressed "no opinion."

Whatever the case, the dilemma is fortunately just a hypothetical one: Nobody's really forcing anyone to choose between the two, so Americans can continue enjoying both as they see fit. And thankfully for the myriad makers of adult-themed products in this country, "every age group covering 18 to over 65 opted for bed over the Web," Poll Position notes. Cyberspace just ain't worth celibacy, it seems.
