The Yankees announced Wednesday that they have declined contract options on first baseman/DH Lance Berkman, right-handed reliever Kerry Wood and designated hitter Nick Johnson for 2011.The club also announced that it had picked up its 2011 option on right-handed pitcher Andrew Brackman, a first-round pick in 2007 who has yet to make his big-league debut but signed a major league deal with Yankees after he was selected.
There are no real surprises here. Wood and Berkman were due $11 million and $15 million, respectively, on their 2011 options, gaudy numbers even for the Yankees considering Wood served as a setup man and Berkman was essentially a platoon player after both were acquired at the trade deadline.
The oft-injured Johnson was limited to just 24 games this year after a wrist injury that never really healed properly and ultimately required surgery. Johnson's $5.5 million option was more modest by the Yankees' standards, but they may wish to leave the DH position open with a number of their stars like Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada and Alex Rodriguez aging.
The Yankees must pay a $2 million buyout to Berkman and a $250,000 buyout to Johnson.
