Someone was going to steal him, it was just a question of who. Turns out it was Maine Red Claws GM Jon Jennings, who boasts one of the smartest front office crews, that's who. The Red Claws selected Magnum Rolle with the third overall pick in the 2010 NBA D-League draft. Rolle was selected 51st overall in June's NBA Draft by the Pacers. After a stellar Summer League, the 6-11 Rolle became a fan favorite but didn't quite make the cut. He should be considered one of the top call-up prospects with an excellent combination of size, range, and athleticism. How athletic, you ask? Ask Terrence Williams.
Rolle has as many weaknesses as any D-League draft prospect, but is also a stellar prospect and more than that is an actual viable big man. Think of it! A viable! NBA D-League! Big! Those never exist! Next to Paul Harris, Tiny Gallon and Mario West, the Red Claws are already looking very much like a team that could be back in playoff contention as they were last year before a late-season slide.
Rolle had a high usage rate with little impact in preseason, but with some time in the D-League, that may be just what he needs to develop his game at the next level. A great fit all around. Plus, his name is awesome, so he's got that going for him.
