Jhonny PeraltaThe Detroit Tigers announced on Tuesday that they have declined the $7.25 million option on Jhonny Peralta for the 2011 season. The Tigers acquired Peralta from the Cleveland Indians this summer in a trade for left-handed pitching prospect Giovanni Soto. It should be pointed out, however, that just because the Tigers don't want to give Peralta over $7 million next season, that doesn't mean they won't try to bring him back cheaper.

"We remain optimistic that a deal can be worked out between Jhonny and the club," said Tigers president, CEO and general manager Dave Dombrowski in a statement.

Peralta hit .253 with eight home runs and 38 RBI for the Tigers in 57 games and played shortstop for the team after spending most of his time at third base in Cleveland. Considering that the Tigers have already re-signed Brandon Inge to play third, odds are that if Peralta does return to Detroit, he'll still be playing shortstop.

Which, to be honest, doesn't sound like that great of a plan unless the Tigers can get Peralta on the cheap. Peralta is a career .263 hitter with some pop in his bat, but he leaves quite a bit to be desired on defense. He's a better third baseman than he is a shortstop, but the truth is he isn't exactly great at either position. He doesn't have the first step needed to play third base effectively, but he doesn't have the overall range you'd like in a shortstop either.
