Jose ReyesThe New York Mets on Wednesday exercised their 2011 contract option on All-Star shortstop Jose Reyes, keeping the dynamic speedster in Flushing for next season.

Reyes, who signed a four-year contract extension in August 2006, will make $11 million next season, and then can become a free agent.

New Mets general manager Sandy Alderson made it sound like he doesn't want things to come to that.

"There never was any doubt about picking up his option," Alderson said in a statement.

"A long-term deal is not out of the question. It is something we can certainly discuss at a future date."

Reyes, who will turn 28 next June, has a .286 average and 331 stolen bases for his career, making him one of the elite leadoff hitters in baseball when healthy. Unfortunately for him and the Mets, injuries have been an issue the last two seasons, with him playing 33 games in 2009 and 133 this season.

If Reyes can find the health that he had from 2005-08, when he averaged 158 games per season, he'll remain one of the Mets' most valuable commodities -- the type that Alderson will want to keep around as he tries to resurrect his new team's fortunes.
