Three University of Southern Mississippi football players were injured as a result of an incident off campus early Sunday morning.

Linebackers Martez Smith, 22, and Tim Green, 21, along with defensive lineman Deddrick Jones, 23, were identified by the school as the injured players. The school confirmed that the three are currently hospitalized as a result of an incident that occurred around 2 a.m. local time in Hattiesburg, Miss.

All three were said to be in fair condition. The nature of their injuries was not disclosed.

"At Southern Miss this afternoon our number one concern is for the health and welfare of these students and for their family members who await their recovery," USM President Martha Saunders said in a statement released by the school. "We will do all we can to assist these young men and their families, as well as assist the Hattiesburg Police Department in its investigation of this event."

"During this difficult time our thoughts and prayers are with these three members of our Southern Miss family, Martez, Tim and Deddrick, as well as their families," USM football coach Larry Fedora said. "These three men are an integral part of the success of our football program and we will continue to keep them in our hearts and hope for a speedy recovery."

The school notes in its statement that police have informed them that the players were not armed.

Southern Mississippi won 31-21 Saturday at Central Florida to improve to 7-3 on the season. It is scheduled to host Houston Saturday night.
