Anchors aweigh, Michigan State. The Spartans are likely heading to sea -- or at least the coastline -- to play on a docked aircraft carrier, according to a published report.The game is expected to be played next season on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2011, according to the Lansing State Journal. Athletic director Mark Hollis confirmed to the paper that an announcement is expected soon. The date -- 11-11-11 -- is currently painted on the floor of Michigan State's home court, Breslin Center, in red, white and blue.
According to the report, North Carolina could be a possible opponent in the game, which could take place in Jacksonville. Two of the service academies may play as well, making it a doubleheader.
Michigan State has not yet officially commented.
The Spartans are currently ranked No. 2 in the nation behind defending national champion Duke. They have been to two consecutive Final Fours and six in the past 12 seasons. Every player who has played for coach Tom Izzo for four full seasons has been to a Final Four. Izzo has been head coach since 1995, having won one national championship (2000) and six Big Ten championships during his tenure.
The Spartans (2-0) next head to the Maui Invitational, a field which includes college basketball powers such as Kentucky and Connecticut.
