Who is the greatest skateboarder of all time? Many would probably say Tony Hawk, but when asked, the Birdman chooses someone else entirely.Hawk sat down for an interview with FanHouse TV and talked about a few of the "bests" in the world of skateboarding. Here are Hawk's picks.
Best current street skater: Paul Rodriguez
Best current vert skater: Bucky Lasek or Bob Burnquist
Best skater of all time: Rodney Mullen
Best skate deck artwork of all time: Powell-Peralta's Skull and Sword for Ray "Bones" Rodriguez
While many outsiders might not be familiar with Mullen, Hawk probably isn't alone in his choice. Mullen was a freestyle prodigy in the 80s, but was a bit of an outcast since flatland skating wasn't nearly as popular as vert skating at the time. As street skating evolved and grew increasingly popular in the 90s, however, street skaters began using many of the tricks Mullen invented.
Street skating continued to grow, eventually passing vert skating entirely, and Mullen's legacy became that of someone who was extremely far ahead of his time. Mullen even went on to record some video parts in the 2000s that are considered to be the among the best -- if not most creative -- video parts ever filmed. (Watch: Rodney vs. Daewon, Round 3)
During the rest of the interview, Hawk also talked about skateboarding's future, his son Riley's success as a pro skater, and the smallest ramp he's ever pulled a McTwist on. The answers to those questions will run in a FanHouse TV video that will be posted soon.
