The Chargers will likely be without running back Ryan Mathews and wide receiver Legedu Naanee when they host the Denver Broncos on Monday night.Though tight end Antonio Gates did not practice this week while resting a torn plantar fascia in his foot, he was listed as questionable.
Naanee, who has missed the previous four games with a hamstring injury, practiced on a limited basis earlier in the week but was held out of Saturday's session. Mathews did not practice at all this week after leaving San Diego's game at Houston on Nov. 7 with a sprained ankle. Both were listed as doubtful.
Safety Steve Gregory also was listed as doubtful with a shoulder injury.
Wide receiver Malcom Floyd, sidelined the past three games with a hamstring injury, was probable for the Broncos game. So was linebacker Brandon Siler (foot).
Gates has said the injury is extremely painful. But it's likely he'll test the foot in pregame warm-ups Monday to try to determine whether he can play. The tight end, who is Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers' favorite target, has nine touchdown catches, leaving him one shy of the third 10-touchdown season of his career.
Gates missed a game for the first time in his career due to injury when the Chargers beat the Texans 29-23 for their second consecutive victory two weeks ago. The Chargers had a bye last week.
Kicker Nate Kaeding took part in practice without restrictions this week and is expected to return after a three-game absence due to a groin strain. Kris Brown, who handled placement chores while Kaeding was sidelined, remains on the roster.
Defensive end Travis Johnson (shoulder) and tight end Kris Wilson (back) were both listed as questionable.
The Broncos ruled out cornerback Andre Goodman, who has been in and out of the lineup in the first half of the season because of hip and quad injuries. Rookie Perrish Cox is slated to make his second consecutive start and sixth this season in place of Goodman.
Wide receiver Eddie Royal (hamstring) and safety Darcel McBath (ankle) were listed as questionable. Linebacker Robert Ayers, sidelined since breaking his foot Oct. 10 at Baltimore, practiced on a limited basis throughout the week. Listed as questionable, Ayers is expected to play Monday night against the Chargers, though he'll likely see part-time duty initially.
