Raiders Punter Shane Lechler Is a Big Fan of Smelling Salts

If the cornucopia of penalties (I'll conservatively estimate that, oh, 75 percent of them were unwarranted) in the Raiders-Steelers game didn't make you turn the channel, you might have noticed Oakland punter Shane Lechler. Every time he took the field in a punting situation, he'd line up some 15 yards behind the line of scrimmage, and a few seconds before the ball was snapped he'd take a nice big whiff of some smelling salts before going about the business of kicking the football as far as possible.

(By the way, it didn't take long for CBS's Dan Fouts to jokingly proclaim that Lechler should be penalized "five yards for littering." Given how the officials were flagging just about everything else, I don't think anybody would have been surprised had it actually come to that.)

I'm not sure if this is customarily part of Lechler's pre-snap routine, but he had the smelling salts in hand prior to each punt against the Steelers Sunday.

In related news: Raiders quarterback Jason Campbell could have used some smelling salts before head coach Tom Cable mercifully removed him from the game in the third quarter.

In case you're wondering: Lechler punted eight times Sunday and averaged 40.5 yards per kick.
