Aubrey Huff was among the best free-agent bargains of last winter, signing a one-year, $3 million deal with the Giants and playing a huge part in their run to a World Series championship. The first baseman will be back in San Francisco next season and beyond, and he'll be retroactively rewarded on payday for the work he did in 2010. The Giants announced Tuesday that they have re-signed Huff to a two-year deal with a team option for 2013. According to The Associated Press, Huff will be paid $10 million each of the next two seasons, and the option -- which can be bought out for $2 million -- carries the same salary.
"We're extremely excited to be able to re-sign Aubrey," Giants general manager Brian Sabean said in a statement. "He was an integral part in the team's success last season, not only with his outstanding play in the field, but also providing a great clubhouse presence."
Huff, a rough-around-the-edges veteran, certainly did his part to keep the Giants loose. He famously took to wearing a red thong during games, and the accessory became so iconic that Huff waved it around throughout the Giants' victory parade and celebration.
Of course, that bit of color wouldn't have been very interesting if he hadn't produced on the field. And that he did, ranking 10th among NL hitters with an .891 OPS as he hit .290 with 35 doubles, 26 homers and 86 RBI and leading the pitching-heavy Giants in most statistical categories.
The 2010 season was Huff's 11th in the majors, and he had never appeared in a playoff game before this year's Division Series.
