Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers had little to offer in terms of an update on Justin Upton trade talks, but a fellow member of the team's front office shed some light on how likely it is that Arizona will move the budding star this winter."I think he'll probably be here on Opening Day," Diamondbacks president and CEO Derrick Hall told MLB.com.
Towers himself has said from the start that the price for Upton in a trade would be exorbitant, and the reason, he told the website, is because he believes the D'backs can win next season.
"We want to win next year," Towers said. "We're not talking about getting A-ball prospects back. It would have to be players that could help us in 2011."
With that goal in mind, Towers does hope to have a decision made on Upton by the conclusion of the Winter Meetings in Orlando, Fla. next month. (They take place from Dec. 6-9.)
"I would say before the end ... we should know," Towers said. "We're kind of walking through this thing slowly right now. If we are overwhelmed in a deal, great. If not, the fallback is we still have Justin Upton on our team, and that's a good thing."
That's not a bad fallback option at all, and it looks like one the Diamondbacks are increasingly likely to choose in the end.
