Apple Inc. announced that it has sold more than 2 million of The Beatles' songs since the Fab Four's catalog was made available on iTunes. In terms of albums, that old-fashioned way of grouping and releasing music, the group has sold more than 450,000 since Nov. 16.
Though one wonders how long the group, which broke up back in 1970, can sustain a pace of selling more than 285,000 songs per day, the funny thing is that some people actually wondered whether Apple and The Beatles had missed the boat by taking years to negotiate a deal that would allow iTunes to peddle the world's best-selling group.
While having what many critics consider timeless songs is a key ingredient to selling records that have been available for more than 50 years on a variety of platforms, keeping apace with new distribution models is not to be taken for granted. The Beatles learned that lesson with the release of "The Beatles: Rock Band," the interactive game that has helped introduce their music to a whole new generation of fans.
