LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- The Los Angeles Dodgers have a full starting rotation after signing right-hander Jon Garland away from the Padres and retaining both Ted Lilly and Hiroki Kuroda this winter, but that isn't stopping them from trying to keep Vicente Padilla around as well. The Dodgers are trying to bring back Padilla in 2011 as a swing-man reliever or perhaps even a closer, a source told FanHouse.
Padilla, 33, has spent the vast majority of his career in the rotation and made 16 appearances -- all starts -- for Los Angeles last season.
Padilla joined the Dodgers in August 2009 after he was released by the Texas Rangers.
His numbers are better, but only slightly so out of the bullpen. Padilla has a 4.15 ERA in 84 relief appearances as opposed to a 4.33 ERA in 237 starts. The relevance of those figures is up for debate, though. Other than one appearance as a reliever in 2009, Padilla hasn't pitched out of the 'pen since 2001.
