Dog Gets Loose on Plane, Bites Flight Attendant
"The captain felt it was prudent to land in Pittsburgh and have the two checked out," airline spokesman Todd Lehmacher said.
Flight 522 was carrying 122 passengers and five crew members from Newark, N.J., to Phoenix this morning when the incident occurred.
The dog, a 12-pound Manchester terrier named Mandy, was traveling with her owner, an 89-year-old New Jersey woman who was headed to Palm Springs, Calif., the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review said.
Mandy became agitated after her sedatives wore off, Allegheny County Police Inspector David Walsh told the newspaper.
US Airways says on its website that passengers may bring one small dog, cat or bird on board for a $100 fee each way. The pets must stay inside their carriers under the seat, the airline said.
Lehmacher said Mandy's owner let the dog out "against our pet policy."
But Walsh told the Tribune-Review that a man sitting next to the owner tried to comfort the petite pooch, which bit him and then broke out of the carrier.
The flight attendant and bitten passenger were treated by paramedics at the Pittsburgh airport and then reboarded the flight and continued to Phoenix, Walsh said.
Mandy and her owner were placed on another flight. Walsh said no charges would be filed against the woman.
