(Dec. 6) -- Under interrogation by police today, a 14-year-old boy admitted to starting the worst forest fire in Israel's history, Haaretz reported. The boy told police he had gone into the forest in the Carmel region of northern Israel to smoke a hookah pipe, which he lit with a piece of burning coal.

When the boy was finished smoking, he tossed the coal into the woods, which quickly set the dry brush ablaze. According to Haaretz, he ran back to his school, but did not report the fire.

So far the Carmel fire has killed 41 people and ravaged thousands of acres, and threatened the port city of Haifa. Approximately 17,000 Haifa residents evacuated their homes as firefighters from Israel and countries from around the world battled the blaze, The Wall Street Journal reported.

As of Sunday, favorable weather conditions helped crews bring the fire under partial control.

The boy will be brought before the Haifa Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, Haaretz reported.
