Rex Ryan Regrets Cutting Danny Woodhead

Danny Woodhead spent 2009 and the 2010 training camp with the Jets, and the versatile back was a fan favorite on "Hard Knocks," the HBO show that followed the Jets during camp last summer. The second-year back also seemed to endear himself to Rex Ryan.

But that wasn't enough to secure a job. Too low on the depth chart, the Jets cut Woodhead, and the Patriots quickly snagged him up. An injury to Kevin Faulk has given Woodhead a prominent role on the Patriots, and he's responded with solid play. With Joe McKnight -- the player who won a roster spot over Woodhead -- a non-factor, it would make sense that the Jets would regret cutting Woodhead.

As the two teams prepare to play Monday night in a game with major playoff implications, Ryan has admitted exactly that.

"Do I regret cutting him? Yeah, absolutely, right now I do," the coach said last week.

It was hard to see Woodhead making as big of an impact as he has this season at the time, but the Jets chose to go with Joe McKnight, the fourth-round draft pick, over Woodhead despite seeing much more out of Woodhead in his time with the franchise.

He had an electric 2009 preseason and ran for 4.3 yards per carry in limited work that regular season. Though he was less stellar in the 2010 preseason, McKnight showed practically nothing. The former USC product ran for only 2.7 yards per carry and lost three fumbles in only 38 total carries. He's only appeared in one game this season, totaling 12 yards on four carries, while Woodhead is the out-of-nowhere story of the NFL season.

On Monday night, Ryan will get an up-close look at one of his rare mistakes as Jets coach.
