Jonathan Bornstein Gets Back to Work With Tigres UANL
The former Chivas USA defender has joined his new club, Mexican First Division side Tigres UANL, and has begun preseason work with his new teammates.
The Los Alamitos, Calif. native announced the move on July 19 after returning home from a successful run at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa with the U.S. National Team. The four-year deal will see Bornstein begin play with the Monterrey-based team in the 2011 Clausura tournament, which kicks off on January 8th of next year.
On Monday, Bornstein and the rest of Tigres played an intra-squad scrimmage at the Mayan Riviera hotel where the team is holding preseason. The game pitted the club's starting XI, which included Bornstein, against its substitutes.
The starters ran out as 5-1 victors thanks to two goals a piece from Hector Mancilla and Lucas Lobos, and one from Damian Álvarez. Bornstein was used primarily as a left-back, a move that pushed Jorge Torres Nilo into the center with Hugo Ayala.
While it's not official, it looks as though Bornstein will be wearing the number 8 jersey for Tigres this season. The U.S. International had worn number 13 during five seasons with Chivas USA (a number he has also worn with the U.S. National Team on several occasions), but Monday's scrimmage saw him don the number 8 for his new club.
