LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- The Cardinals have avoided arbitration with new acquisition Ryan Theriot by signing him to a one-year, $3.3 million deal, FanHouse has learned. St. Louis acquired the infielder from the Dodgers last week in exchange for right-hander Blake Hawksworth in a trade that came shortly before Theriot was expected to be non-tendered. General manager John Mozeliak indicated after the deal that Theriot could be the regular shortstop for the Cardinals.
Theriot, who made $2.6 million last season, split 2010 between the Cubs and Dodgers. He played mostly second base but had been the Cubs' starting shortstop the bulk of the previous three seasons.
Theriot hit .270 and posted a career-low .633 OPS last season.
