Maple Leafs Fans Throw Waffles On Ice After Latest Loss

Over the years hockey fans have been known to throw a variety of items on the ice. Hats, to celebrate a three-goal performance. Panthers fans had a brief run where they tossed plastic rats on the ice after each and every goal. A Senators fan threw a Dany Heatley jersey on the ice during his return to Ottawa last week. Then there was that game in Sweden a couple of years ago when fans covered the ice with sex toys in an effort to mock an opposing player. On Thursday ... well, we had a new one.

Following Toronto's 4-1 loss to Philadelphia, a few disgruntled -- I'm guessing they're disgruntled -- Maple Leafs fans decided to litter the Air Canada Centre ice with waffles, one of which hit the stick of defenseman Francois Beauchemin. Yup. Waffles.

Joked Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger after the game, via TSN, "Who brings a waffle to a game?" It's a great question, and one that doesn't appear to have an answer at the moment (I guess rotten tomatoes weren't available?)

Leafs fans, of course, aren't happy with the on-ice performance of the team in what appears to be a sixth straight season without a trip to the playoffs, as it currently sits in 13th place in the Eastern Conference. There's not even the hope of a high draft pick on the horizon as the Leafs first round draft pick belongs to the Boston Bruins. That pick, along with last year's top pick (No. 2 overall) which was used on Tyler Seguin, was traded to Boston in exchange for Phil Kessel prior to last season.

Kessel, meanwhile, is currently mired in a lengthy slump that has seen him record just seven points in his past 20 games, while the team has won just six of its past 24 games after starting the season 4-0.
