Edward Garcia Jr., 36, and his wife, Melissa Hope Garcia, 25, were arrested by U.S. marshals and Los Angeles police officers at a location in Hollywood, the Los Angeles Times reported. Details of the arrest and how the Garcias were located were not immediately released.
They had been the subject of a manhunt after a maid found a backpack containing body parts in a room at the Continental Hotel on Nov. 29. Investigators found additional body parts wrapped in a blanket under a bed. A knife was also found inside the hotel room, police said.
The victim was later identified as Herbert Tracy White, 49, of Hollywood.
Authorities said they linked the $40-a-night hotel room to the Garcias, and a warrant was issued charging each with one count of murder. The couple, who are from York, Pa., had been in the Los Angeles area for about two days before the homicide. Both Garcias have criminal records for robbery and drug offenses.
Police said robbery may have been a motive for the slaying. They believe the Garcias tortured White before they killed him.
Family members said White often tried to help recovering alcoholics and drug addicts and others who were down on their luck. White himself had battled with alcohol addiction but had been sober for 15 years, they said.
