There was a lot of excitement on Long Island during Saturday's 5-4 Thrashers victory over the Islanders. Not only was the crowd taken over by busloads of Quebec Nordiques fans trying to get their message out about the NHL returning to their town, but also because Bryan Little managed to score directly off a faceoff, stunning Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro in what might be the most symbolic moment of the 2010-11 season for the struggling franchise. At the 11:35 mark of the third period, with game tied 3-3, Little was in the circle to take a shorthanded draw to the left of Dipietro. As the puck was dropped, Little gave it a quick whack as it slowly floated toward the net, beating the Islanders goaltender as he was caught napping in his crease.
The look on Dipietro's face in the moment after the goal says it all.
In a game that was decided by one goal, that's a big one. The Thrashers scored four goals in the third period on their way to the win. For the Islanders, it's their fifth loss in a row and 19th in their past 20 games.
